Hold Your Fire: When is the Risk Hunt Inappropriate?

6 October 2023 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

"Risk Hunt" has become one of the most popular tools among EVRAZ employees. However, it is not always used for its intended purpose. It's like using a sledgehammer to drive in a small nail instead of a hammer.

Plant employees have actively joined the risk hunt. Since the beginning of 2022, more than 28,000 risks have been "caught"

If You Can, Do It

Imagine you are an electrician. While checking electrical equipment in your area, you suddenly discover uncovered junction boxes on the wall. What will you do? Close them, of course, as it is part of your duties. Or what if you find a piece of rebar at your workplace that someone could trip over? You remove it — this is where you work, which means you take care of your own safety. Unfortunately, not everyone does this.

The "Risk Hunt" mobile app is an excellent tool for finding and recording risks. However, it must be used wisely. Our employees have become very active in this work. But sometimes they record risks that they are capable of eliminating themselves. "Risk Hunt" is a great tool, but it must be used intelligently.

It's Our Job

Each of us has our own workspace. We are the masters here, which means we are responsible for cleanliness and safety. It's like being at home: who else but us will maintain order and keep our loved ones safe? If you see a wide-open window and you have a small child, you close it. If you break a cup, you clean it up. It's that simple.

You shouldn't record things that you perform as part of your daily work or duties. For example, if raw material spills for a conveyor operator, it's better to clean up the spill rather than photograph the hazard. At our plant, up to 100 risks can be recorded in a single day! And some of these, workers are capable of eliminating themselves because it is their job. Imagine this: you are given a work order to clean an area. You take a shovel, but instead of cleaning the spill, you take a photo of the spot.

Risks that every employee should eliminate as part of their daily work do not need to be recorded.

If you can eliminate a hazard, do it. If you realize it's beyond your power, signal it: fence off the dangerous area, inform your supervisor, and record the risk. You can also refuse to perform dangerous tasks — these are the basic rules that must be followed by all company employees.

Each of us must take all measures before any work to perform it without risk to life.
