Airborne Dreams and Harsh Reality: Why Safety in Hobby Sports Matters!

Airborne Dreams and Harsh Reality: Why Safety in Hobby Sports Matters!

Hello everyone! My name is Olga, and I am a safety project manager. My days consist of schedules, reports, meetings, and inspections. To save myself from burnout and bring back at least a drop of that carefree childhood, I found the perfect antidote — trampoline jumping.

Coming to the gym, I felt like I learned to breathe all over again! The feeling of weightlessness when you push off the bouncy net, the thrill of flight... It was all pure happiness, forgotten since I was ten. I was flying, and my work anxieties stayed somewhere far below. The coach praised my progress, and I looked forward to every training session!

But one evening, everything collapsed in the literal sense of the word. It was a regular Tuesday. Inspired by my previous successes, I made a rather high jump. And at that moment, there was a dry, cracking sound. The support leg of the trampoline broke off at the edge. My "weightlessness" abruptly ended in a clumsy fall.

A sharp pain in my ankle, and only one thought in my head: "Why?". It turned out that the coach hadn't checked the mounts and the condition of the structures before the session started... We, adults coming in after work in pursuit of emotions and stress relief, blindly trusted them. And we shouldn't have!

The result was a severe leg dislocation and almost two months of complete downtime. No trampolines, no jogging, and most importantly — a painful return to normal life, but now with crutches and pain.

This story cost me dearly, but I learned an invaluable lesson from it. Now I understand: safety is not just boring protocols for professional athletes. It is the foundation of any movement, even as a hobby! We amateurs are especially vulnerable because we come for the emotions and often lose our vigilance.

Now, before doing my first jumping exercise, I take a look at the key components of the trampoline myself. And I advise everyone to do the same! Let your favorite hobby bring only joy and health, rather than knocking you out of action for months. Don't hesitate to ask and check once more. Your health is solely in your hands!

What do you think? Who is primarily responsible for safety during such hobby training sessions? Let me know in the comments.

1. The coach/instructor. They are professionals and must check the equipment.
2. The sports enthusiast themselves. My health is my concern; I need to be attentive myself.
3. The gym/club owner. They must ensure all equipment is in good working order.
4. Shared responsibility. The coach must instruct, and the athlete themselves must use their head.
