Gamification as a Method for HSE Training

14 November 2023 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

Gamification in training involves the integration of game elements into the learning process to increase learner motivation and engagement. It can be used for various HSE training areas, including: enhancing safety culture, teaching the theoretical foundations of occupational safety, and practical sessions on safe work techniques and methods.

At the same time, gamification does not always require a full transition to a game platform (board games, VR content, business games, etc.). You can use just one or several of the most popular gamification elements:

  • Points and achievements: This method involves awarding points for completing tasks or reaching specific goals. Points can be used to track a learner's progress or to provide additional rewards.
  • Experience points and levels: This approach is based on the concept of video games, where the learner earns “experience” for completing tasks and reaches new levels. This can motivate learners to achieve new goals and improve their skills.
  • Rewards and prizes: This type of gamification involves rewarding learners for achieving specific goals or participating in activities. Rewards can be tangible (e.g., souvenirs) or intangible (e.g., extra points or experience points).
  • Competitions and tournaments: This method involves holding competitions or tournaments between learners. This can stimulate competition and help learners improve their skills.

Benefits of gamification in HSE training:

  1. Increased motivation: using game elements makes training more interesting and attractive for employees, which in turn increases their motivation to learn and retain information.

  2. Engagement: gamification makes the learning process interactive, which promotes active participation and interaction among learners.

  3. Improved problem-solving skills: many games include elements that require players to solve various problems and tasks. This helps learners develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

  4. Practical application: some games can be based on real-life situations, allowing learners to apply their knowledge in practice.

However, along with the benefits, gamification in HSE training also has factors that can slow down the learning process:

  1. Difficulty in assessing results: since gamification is often based on game points and achievements, it can be difficult to objectively assess how well the learner has mastered the material.
  2. Not suitable for everyone: gamification may not be suitable for those who prefer a more traditional approach to learning.

  3. Development time: creating an effective gamified training system can require a significant investment of time.

Gamification often solves motivation challenges and allows for the engagement of a larger number of participants; however, it is important to maintain a delicate balance between the game and information components.
