How Suvorov Engaged Soldiers in Battle and What It Has to Do with Safety

Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1730-1800) was an outstanding Russian general, commander, and military theorist. He left an indelible mark on history and earned well-deserved fame through his bravery, tactical genius, and strategic thinking.

The Suvorov system of military training and education, which is still considered one of the most effective military strategies, is based on rigor, discipline, and rapid decision-making on the battlefield.

Suvorov was known for his attitude toward his soldiers. He was always in close contact with them, demonstrating care and understanding. He also introduced innovative training methods and paid special attention to the psychological aspect of combat readiness.

“Always have a definite goal,” Suvorov said. “Battles whose objective remains unclear are the favorite tactic of the ignorant.” The Russian “avos” (relying on luck) is unacceptable in the Suvorov system; the actions of every unit and every soldier always have a very specific goal. Recall Suvorov’s aphorism: “Every soldier must know his maneuver.” According to Suvorov, this means not only a detailed briefing before a battle but also communicating the goals of the regiment, division, army, corps, and even the entire campaign to the personnel.

Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov’s story inspires us and shows that engaging employees in safety is not only the responsibility of management but also an opportunity for every employee to demonstrate their best qualities.

Collaboration for safety: engaging employees in a common task.

When an employee understands that their actions can affect the safety of the entire team, they become more responsible and attentive to their actions.

Responsibility for safety: involving employees in the decision-making process.

When employees participate in making safety decisions, they feel more accountable and are ready to take on greater responsibility for their actions.

Safety team: involving employees in the development and implementation of safety measures.

When employees participate in developing and implementing safety measures, they feel like part of a team and are more motivated to follow those measures.

Safety culture starts with everyone: involving employees in shaping a safe environment.

When every employee takes an active part in shaping a safe environment, it creates an atmosphere of trust and respect that promotes the safety of everyone.

This story clearly demonstrates that engaging workers in safety is not only an effective way to ensure workplace safety but also a way to create a favorable work environment where every employee can reach their potential.
