Artificial Intelligence as an Assistant in HSE: A Step into the Future

27 September 2024 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

In today's environment, where Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) requirements are becoming increasingly stringent and enterprises strive to increase their competitiveness, the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies is a logical step for process optimization. As an HSE manager, I can say with confidence that AI technologies are capable of not only making our work easier but also taking it to a new level of efficiency.

Problems and Challenges in HSE

One of the main problems companies face is the shortage of qualified personnel. The number and quality of HSE specialists do not always meet the needs of enterprises, especially in large and diversified organizations. A lack of time, resources, and human capacity is the bottleneck that limits data processing, monitoring compliance with norms and regulations, and conducting briefings. As a result, these tasks may be incomplete or delayed.

These problems can be partially offset by AI assistants. AI technologies, which are already being used today to optimize routine tasks, allow specialists to focus on strategic goals without spending time on processing repetitive data and compiling reports. Companies that implement such solutions stay ahead of their peers due to their ability to quickly process large volumes of information and make informed decisions based on the data obtained.

Main Functions of an AI Assistant in HSE

An AI assistant is a program specifically designed for HSE matters and has the following functionality:

  1. Regulatory documentation analysis: AI can automatically analyze new regulations and standards. This provides brief summaries for specialists, significantly simplifying the process of familiarizing themselves with new documents.
  2. Internal document processing: AI can analyze internal structures and company policies, identify their compliance with regulatory requirements, and suggest adjustments.
  3. Automation of briefings and training: The AI assistant can create briefing scenarios and assign them to employees, track their completion, and record results, thereby significantly simplifying the staff training process.
  4. Incident and accident analysis: The system can compile data on incidents, analyze their causes, and suggest measures to prevent recurrence. This allows for an improved risk management system based on accumulated experience.
  5. Report generation and preparation of documents for inspections: AI significantly frees up time for reporting by automatically generating documents for regulatory authorities and internal audits.
  6. Risk forecasting: Based on data analysis, AI can predict potential risks and provide recommendations for their prevention.

Security of AI Use

Despite all its advantages, it is important to take security issues seriously. One of the main problems is the protection of internal company data. Using open, cloud-based systems and large language models that process corporate documents creates a risk of information leakage. Therefore, for working with AI in the HSE field, small local language models should be used, which are narrowly tailored to a specific task and stored within the company's IT perimeter without external access.

These models are developed and adapted to the needs of companies, which minimizes the risk of leaks and ensures a high level of confidentiality. Storing and processing data within the company eliminates the possibility of transferring information to external servers, making the use of such technologies safe.

Potential Risks of Using AI

Despite all the benefits, AI technologies carry risks that must be considered. Firstly, if incorrect data is uploaded into the system, it can lead to erroneous conclusions and decisions. That is why it is crucial to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the input information.

Secondly, there is a risk that users, by relying on AI, may lose their ability for critical thinking. This technology is a tool; it will not replace humans but only empower them.

Prospects for AI Development in HSE

Despite the possible risks, the future belongs to technology. Even today, we see how it helps simplify routine processes, increase the accuracy of data analysis, and minimize errors. In the coming years, the development of such technologies will significantly increase the level of safety at enterprises, strengthen control over compliance with regulatory requirements, and reduce the number of accidents.

Implementing an AI assistant into the HSE management system is a step toward digitalization and process optimization, which will allow companies not only to meet growing legislative requirements but also to improve the quality of work. Those companies that start using AI now will not only be able to adapt to new conditions faster.
