"Safety is Everyone's Choice": How Social Networks Help Build a Safety Culture

It is difficult to overestimate the role of social networks in modern life. Their audience continues to grow, attracting users primarily with accessible and engaging content. However, this powerful communication channel can and should be used to solve professional tasks. The attention that people voluntarily give to social networks every day is a valuable resource that an HSE specialist can direct toward spreading vital information.

Over two years ago, the Vorkuta Linear Pipeline Operation Center successfully integrated this approach into its work. A weekly column titled "Safety is Everyone's Choice" was launched on the branch's VKontakte page. Its concept is based on the principle of peer-to-peer learning, where employees themselves remind each other of key requirements. The development of the project can be divided into several stages:

  • content development: initially, publications were prepared solely based on the requirements of state HSE regulations; later, checklists from regulatory (supervisory) bodies, as well as internal corporate control, were added;
  • personnel involvement: the initiative to prepare materials for publication was first supported by the heads of structural divisions, demonstrating their personal commitment to safety issues; gradually, specialists and HSE representatives joined in, making the column truly grassroots.

The implementation of this project allowed the company to go beyond formal information sharing. Presenting information in the familiar format of a social network significantly increased employees' awareness of requirements, their level of knowledge in the field of HSE, and the overall industrial safety culture at the enterprise. This experience proves that modern communication tools are an effective supplement to traditional working methods, helping to convey critically important rules in a way that people perceive easily and positively.
