The modern approach to HSE is inextricably linked to environmental protection. For large industrial enterprises, minimizing the negative impact on ecosystems is becoming not just a legal requirement, but a conscious strategy of a socially oriented business. During the webinar, Maria Golovneva, Chief Specialist of the HSE Department at Zarubezhneft JSC, analyzes in detail the company's practical experience in implementing large-scale biodiversity conservation projects in Russia.
One of the key areas of the company's environmental program was the support of the West Siberian population of the Siberian Crane, whose numbers had dropped to a critical 20 individuals. Using the example of cooperation with the Oksky State Nature Reserve, the speaker shows how a corporate initiative evolved from basic administration into comprehensive work.
During the project implementation, fundamental infrastructure problems of the breeding center were solved: the water supply system was restored, the multifunctional complex was repaired, and a winter enclosure with heated floors was equipped. This made it possible to create stable conditions for breeding rare birds. In addition, the speaker notes the importance of expeditions to Yakutia to collect genetic material, which directly affects the successful formation of a reserve population and the subsequent release of chicks equipped with GPS trackers into the wild.
The second part of the presentation is devoted to the work of a subsidiary at the Kharyaga field in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. The wild reindeer was chosen as the flagship species for monitoring here, as its population suffers from poaching and habitat transformation.
The presentation details the mechanism of field research: from ground routes and high-resolution satellite imagery to plans for GPS tagging of individuals. The speaker emphasizes that a systematic fight against poaching is necessary for a real recovery of the reindeer population (with a growth potential of up to 3,000 individuals in 10-15 years). As an optimal solution, the company is working on an initiative to create a new federal Specially Protected Natural Area (SPNA) at the junction of three regions, which will also provide jobs for the local population.
In addition to major investment projects, corporate volunteering is an important element of environmental culture. The company has regulated the participation of employees in environmental campaigns, providing them with the necessary workwear and personal protective equipment. Participation in cleaning riverbanks, collecting waste in natural areas, and plastic recycling projects forms a sustainable environmental mindset within the team.
