Professional Excellence Competitions

29 October 2024 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

Professional excellence competitions play a vital role in shaping a safety culture within an enterprise and enhancing employee professionalism. They encourage workers to deepen their knowledge, including in the field of HSE, and apply best practices in the workplace. Let's consider several aspects that contribute to this process:

Improving Knowledge and Skills

Participation in competitions requires thorough preparation. Employees study current regulations, the best approaches to performing tasks, and methods for preventing hazardous situations. This helps reinforce safety knowledge, reducing the likelihood of errors in real-world work.

Stimulating Interest in HSE

Competitions help make the process of learning and complying with HSE standards more engaging and motivating. A competitive spirit awakens a drive for professional excellence and adherence to safety standards, ultimately increasing the level of protection for all workers.

Spreading Best Practices

Competition participants demonstrate their knowledge and skills to their colleagues, which facilitates the sharing of advanced experience among employees. This allows for the implementation of more effective and safer working methods, building a safety culture across the entire organization.

Identifying Areas for Improvement

Competitions help identify weaknesses in employee training and the HSE system. Management can analyze the results and organize additional training or revise existing procedures for improvement.

Increasing Employee Loyalty

Participation in professional excellence competitions helps boost employee self-esteem and job satisfaction. They feel valued by the company, which reduces staff turnover and creates a more cohesive team focused on safety compliance.

It was important for us that plant workers consciously followed HSE requirements as their own decision, rather than a "top-down" order that could be ignored when no one is watching. Furthermore, given the current staff shortages, we needed to show that we value our employees and recognize their daily hard work. To address these challenges, we came up with the idea of holding professional excellence competitions for our key roles.

Initially, as a pilot project, we chose three positions: tractor-machinist, milking machine operator, and deboner. To conduct the competitions, we developed a series of tasks/stages. The competition tasks were divided into several blocks:

  • theoretical, which included test tasks on job duties and HSE questions.
  • practical, which was divided into several stages: safe execution of technological operations; practicing first aid skills; extinguishing a simulated fire (fire extinguisher skills were evaluated).

Points were awarded for completing tasks, and both the completion time and the correctness of the workers' actions were evaluated.

The competitions were accompanied by PR and media support. Following the results, all participants received valuable gifts from the company, and the winners received cash prizes.

This pilot project generated many positive emotions and suggestions from employees. Consequently, this year the competition was held for 7 types of professions across 3 regions where the group of companies operates. Practical tasks were also adjusted to be more challenging.

This project has proven its value for the workers and the company as a whole. As the highest validation of this project, it should be noted that the winner of our 2024 competition went on to win the national deboner competition.

Thus, professional excellence competitions are an effective tool for developing a safety culture in an organization and increasing employee professionalism. They not only improve the practical training of workers but also motivate them toward continuous improvement, making the work environment safer and more productive.
