Site Safety Map

To increase risk awareness, I would like to share an important tool: the "site safety map," which helps to visualize risks in the area and apply the necessary personal protective equipment.

A safety map is a visual "panorama" of a production area that combines the layout, hazards, protective measures, and rules of conduct in one place. Such a map helps quickly orient employees and contractors, reduce the likelihood of incidents, and speed up the work permit process.

What can be displayed on a site safety map

  1. Site plan with a breakdown of zones and equipment, including the boundaries of hazardous areas and traffic directions.
  2. Hazards and restrictions

– Local risks, for example: high temperatures, impact, pinching, work at height, moving parts of equipment, etc.;

– High-hazard zones, areas of potential falling objects, and access prohibitions/restrictions;

  1. Safety equipment and resources:

– Anchor points for work at height, fencing, and safety nets;

– PPE by zone;

– Rescue and evacuation equipment: first aid kits, fire hydrants, fire extinguishers, etc.;

  1. Legend and rules of conduct: explanations of all pictograms, a list of key risks and requirements, and emergency contacts.
  2. Document details: map approval date, person responsible for development, and version. You can also create a QR code with a link to instructions, the rescue plan, and other useful documents related to this site.

The map is created for:

  • Quick orientation of new employees and contractors. It can also be used for visual briefings before starting work;
  • 5S support: zoning, standardizing approaches, and minimizing chaos and clutter;
  • Understanding risks when performing high-hazard work, which reduces the time required to approve work permits, as the information is available on a single diagram. The map can also be used to develop a method statement, taking into account already identified risks;
  • Support during safety walkarounds and personnel training;
  • Improving emergency preparedness: personnel can see the nearest firefighting equipment, first aid kits, and evacuation routes.

When the map needs to be reviewed and updated

A map review is mandatory for any change affecting risks or the routes of people, equipment, or cargo:

  • Layout changes: relocation of equipment, emergence of temporary zones (long-term repairs or construction work), changes to walkways or stairs;
  • New or altered hazards: introduction of new surfaces, changes in temperature conditions, etc.;
  • Changes in protective and emergency equipment: moving or adding fire extinguishers, hydrants, first aid kits, anchor points, fencing, etc.;
  • Rule updates: new requirements for PPE, permits, and movement rules on the site;
  • Following incident investigations: identification of blind spots, traffic flow conflicts, or unreadable/outdated symbols;

A well-designed and up-to-date safety map turns the site into a "transparent" system: all individuals entering the area can clearly see and understand the hazards BEFORE entering, know how to protect themselves, and are aware of the main requirements for their stay. This is one of the most cost-effective HSE tools, requiring no direct financial costs, as such maps can be developed by the company's own team.
