How Not to Lose Yourself on the Path to a Safety Culture?

Why do we need to exchange experience? We are all different and similar at the same time! Everyone has a different background and an interesting path ahead. Often, we need more than just a professional case study or a breakdown of our problems; we need simple support on our rather difficult and specific journey toward safety.

What problems can an HSE specialist face?

Burnout and the urge to scrap everything. Take a break. Don't look at colleagues who are on fire with the profession, ideas, and projects. Just rest and think about what brings you the most pleasure at work. And yes, it could just be the money or a delicious coffee at the shop across from the office. Allow yourself to focus on small joys rather than burning ideas. Asking yourself the "Five Whys" during such breaks often saves the day and opens up new, interesting paths for development. And don't hesitate to ask for help!

Excessive multitasking. Yes, a modern HSE specialist is expected to be a project producer, an architect of training products, a data analyst, a coach, a designer, and the list goes on indefinitely. This can even be enjoyable! However, such multitasking leads to a loss of focus. Dealing with redundant processes prevents you from concentrating on important tasks and cutting out the noise. Manage your time. If you want to be versatile, allocate specific timeframes for one or two projects, and put all additional ones on a task list for later implementation.

Career path: forward or upward? In most companies, being an HSE specialist is a kind of career ceiling. But how should you view this? Upward development doesn't always bring the right satisfaction to a specialist. The strong skills we develop while implementing projects to improve working conditions are much more important. Growing your expertise often brings more satisfaction (including financial) than climbing the corporate ladder.

"We've always worked this way, and there hasn't been a single accident." This is perhaps the most demotivating phrase for an HSE specialist. For many, working with risks and assessments is associated with being a tarot card reader. No statistics will prove otherwise if an employee is used to an unsafe way of working. Alas, this requires a mature realization that every job has its difficulties. Our task is to work with these challenges and find an approach. Even if sometimes it is not a risk-awareness approach, but a mandatory one. In such cases, networking and mutual support are extremely helpful.

"I can't think of anything." Or "all innovations have already been invented and implemented." But why do you need to invent something? Use what's available! You have a unique opportunity to take a ready-made product, proven in another company, and implement it in your processes. Marking systems, feedback forms, employee chats — you don't need to patent inventions. You just need to implement the process and enjoy the results. Safety is not a competition. It's a way of life! So why not follow the example of those whose vision of this lifestyle resonates with yours.

The most valuable thing about all of us is that we make this world safer! It is a difficult path, full of unexpected turns and unpredictable scenarios. But this path leads us to the common goal of safety for everyone! And to avoid getting lost on this journey, you can and should walk it by relying on the experience and support of your fellow colleagues!

Stay safe, everyone!
