Induction Video Course for Drivers

Induction Video Course for Drivers

Timely immersion of contractor employees into the rules applicable at the client's site is the foundation for safe work. Irkutsk Oil Company organizes an Induction Course for partners, which contractor employees undergo during their first two weeks of work at our facilities. The course lasts about three hours. As part of the course, experts inform contractor employees about the golden safety rules adopted by our company, the principles of dynamic risk assessment, local road safety and fire safety regulations, procedures for encounters with wild animals, and other important HSE issues. The presentation is accompanied by slides and videos.

At our facility, the Irkutsk Polymer Plant (IPP), there are specific driving requirements: a stricter speed limit than the company average, heavy pedestrian traffic, and a unique accident notification scheme. Therefore, the induction course for drivers starting work at the IPP had to be adapted to our conditions. We needed a mini-course specifically for IPP drivers, which was later planned for integration into the Irkutsk Oil Company's induction course, and I began this work in early 2024.

After analyzing the existing road safety system, I compiled a list of priority topics for drivers — the minimum set of knowledge without which a driver lacking experience at our facility could end up in a dangerous situation. I decided to create an accessible and effective product that is easy to understand. Since most people (up to 95%) are audiovisual learners who process information through both sight and sound, I decided to film a short video clearly demonstrating our road safety rules and the consequences of non-compliance.

I wrote the script and selected actors from my immediate circle. Then the filming and post-processing began. During the shoot, the weather changed drastically several times, and a road accident occurred on-site (a dump truck rollover), the aftermath of which was captured on film. For filming, I used my iPhone 14 Pro and our HSE department's standard DJI Mini 2 drone, which we typically use for orthophotomaps and recording violations during work at height. After editing the film, I recorded the voiceover and added subtitles. The result was a twelve-minute training video titled "Induction Course for Vehicle Drivers."

Today, my video is shown during the Induction Course and at "Safety Stop" sessions with drivers. It is also integrated into the training video loops on information screens at the Irkutsk Polymer Plant (in office corridors, canteens, and dormitories). Additionally, the logistics and procurement departments use the video to send to suppliers whose drivers enter the plant site to deliver equipment and materials. We actively distribute the video through messenger workgroups.

Professional studio services for a similar video start at 500,000 rubles, so we managed not only to create a useful product but also to save the company's budget.

I present to you the video "Induction Course for Vehicle Drivers"; perhaps it will inspire you to create a similar product at your own facility.
