To encourage employees to achieve better results in occupational safety, enhance professional competencies, and exchange best practices in HSE management, the Gazprom Energoholding Group of Companies held its first-ever competition for the best HSE specialist.
Most of our time was spent developing the regulations for the competition stages to ensure we covered all aspects of HSE activities.
Ultimately, we decided it was most effective to include the following stages:
For each stage, detailed regulations were developed describing the scoring system and the requirements for its implementation.
To ensure impartiality, third-party experts were invited as judges. Nevertheless, there were some disputes during the stages where the decision to award points is made by a human, rather than a machine based on testing.
The most spectacular stage was the first aid assessment, where participants had to work with extras acting as victims and apply bandages, splints, etc. It was very interesting to observe the well-coordinated actions of the contestants.
There was special interest in the stage of selecting PPE by profession. Here, it was necessary to work extensively with regulatory documentation describing PPE, their design, and protection levels, with special attention paid to risk management.
In the end, we had a magnificent competition. The best HSE specialists were identified, and separate nominations were introduced to recognize participants for their demonstrated professional qualities, regardless of the final standings.
As a result, the best employees were awarded certificates and valuable prizes. However, there were no losers. During the preparation and execution of the competition, all employees and members of the organizing committee improved their competencies regarding the competition topics and received professional recognition for their work.
