Vision Zero Concept and Well-being Index
In the modern Vision Zero concept, the focus naturally shifts from basic safety to the comprehensive well-being of employees. Using production and logistics sites as an example, Valeria Shulyak explains how a systematic approach to the physical and mental health of personnel affects the overall safety culture and enterprise efficiency.
The speaker recommends starting any changes with an assessment of the current state. For this purpose, a well-being index is used, formed on the basis of large-scale staff surveys covering all levels — from frontline employees to top management. This prevents the scattering of resources and allows the budget to be targeted at areas that truly require improvement at a specific site, forming a clear development roadmap.
Upgrading Workplaces: From Microclimate to Ergonomics
Physical comfort in the workplace is directly related to reducing fatigue and the risk of occupational injuries. The presentation details the approach to modernizing workspaces:
- Microclimate and ventilation. In cold finished goods warehouses, it is critical to provide warm and comfortable amenity rooms. Installing breathers for supply ventilation and special screens on air conditioners prevents direct exposure to cold air and reduces the incidence of illness.
- Work ergonomics. To reduce back strain during order picking, the use of industrial exoskeletons is analyzed. For office employees, height-adjustable desks are introduced, allowing them to alternate between sitting and standing, which is especially relevant for the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders.
- Smart PPE. Testing helmets with built-in impact and spatial position sensors (e.g., prolonged immobility), integrated with the access control system (ACS), provides automated safety monitoring on site.
Anti-stress, Nutrition, and Corporate Health
Mental health and stress reduction are an integral part of well-being programs. Using corporate initiatives as an example, the speaker shows how to engage employees in self-care and create a healthy work environment.
- Recognition and motivation programs. Gamified competitions for forklift drivers assessing practical skills (e.g., precision cargo handling) increase the prestige of the profession. And the introduction of a simple electronic "Thank You" system significantly improves the psychological climate in the team.
- Psychological support. Using corporate screensavers on work computers with information about the availability of anonymous free consultations with a psychologist has multiplied the number of specialists seeking help in stressful situations, removing the stigma from this topic.
- Nutrition quality and healthy lifestyle. The provision of free hot meals is complemented by color-coding of dishes (a "healthiness traffic light"), which forms a habit of a healthy diet among employees. Additionally, sports challenges are held, including plogging (running while picking up trash), which combines physical activity with social responsibility.
