Principles of Effective Cooperation with Contractors

26 November 2021 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

Today, the development of any business is impossible without involving contractors.

The common ground uniting the interests of the client and the contractor is the specific work or service that must be performed safely, with high quality, and within the set timeframe. The success of such cooperation is only possible with the engaged and significant contribution of each participant to what is now their shared cause.

At the same time, each party pursues its legitimate interests: the client is interested in professional performance of the work, while the contractor seeks to deepen cooperation and expand their client base.

The client's contribution consists of clearly defining tasks (feasibility of work, requirements and standards, scope, deadlines); providing necessary resources (finances, time, etc.); and monitoring and assisting during the work.

The contractor's contribution consists of adhering to the principles of conscientious activity: safety, professionalism, integrity, cooperation, and responsibility.

The leading role in these relationships lies with the client (including the contractor when they involve subcontractors).

Key Principles of Cooperation:

? The Principle of Partnership - provides for mutual respect between the parties, treating each other as professionals in their field, establishing mutually beneficial cooperation, and, if necessary, providing support and assistance during the work.

? The One Workforce Principle - defines the client's equal treatment of all workers (both their own and those of contractors) involved in production activities at the facility regarding compliance with established safety standards.

? The Principle of Long-Term Cooperation - building relationships with contractors on a long-term basis, which is the key to their quality and efficiency.

? The Principle of Considering Contractor Business Development Interests. This principle implies that the client refrains from paying the minimum cost for work and services when concluding contracts. The client must realize the importance (primarily for themselves) of providing the contractor (and its subcontractors) with the necessary financial means and other resources for the proper implementation of production activities and ensuring their safety.

The current challenges of modern business create the need to develop and implement a "full package" of requirements — specific (or special) for each sphere of activity and area of application. First and foremost, this concerns Safety requirements, which are concomitant and dominant in the modern world in any type of business.
Based on the fundamental and universal principles of effective collaboration with contractors outlined by S. Mazhkenov — each participant of the HSE DAYS Project and/or other committed users (including on the basis of applicable requirements) can proceed to build a system of stable (sustainable) supply chain management...
Importantly, such a management system can be harmoniously integrated into the macro-system of managing the entire business of an enterprise — simultaneously for safety purposes, as well as for development and improvement of quality, competitiveness, and leadership...
The information presented by S. Mazhkenov on the HSE DAYS website (including principles of effective collaboration with contractors) can be useful, for example, for creating a business "from scratch," when the foundations of proper management and organizational activities of newly created enterprises are being laid; of course, this experience will also be useful for all other experienced workers.
