Proverbs and sayings were created by the people, who infused them with their observations, centuries of experience, and life wisdom. Thus, people who could not yet read or write created a unique oral school of life. Many proverbs and sayings have been validated by life, including in the development of a workplace safety culture.
The proverb "Intelligence is not enough without a conscience" suggests that one must possess not only intellect but also a conscience to live successfully and achieve their goals. While intelligence and skill can help a person do their job, a lack of responsibility and conscience can lead to actions that harm others and society, as well as negatively impact the individual's own life. An employee must understand, know, be able to, and — most importantly — want to perform their work safely. Neglecting safety requirements is dangerous for both employers and employees, and the reckless actions of a few can lead to the most severe consequences.
The most effective tools for encouraging safe work are those that foster a culture of openness and trust. This further confirms that corporate culture and safety culture are inextricably linked. Building on this, and to increase awareness of one's responsibility to family and colleagues regarding the consequences of ignoring safety rules, we proposed preventive seminars for employees who have committed violations. These employees attend "Safe Behavior Lessons" risk assessment seminars, where they are then given the opportunity to record in a "Book of Conscience" the reasons for their violations and a promise to their loved ones and colleagues to choose safe behavior, reject violations, and prioritize human life and health.
Our goal is to develop a sense of responsibility and an understanding of the gravity of ignoring safety requirements, fostering a protective attitude toward one's own health and the health of others based on the principle: "I care."
