Context: Why a New Approach to Road Safety is Important
Reducing workplace accident rates is a task that requires not only control but also a deep analysis of the causes of incidents. In the context of fly-in fly-out work, harsh climatic, and road conditions, traditional road safety management methods often prove insufficient. Dmitry Feoktistov, Head of the Road Safety Department at the Irkutsk Oil Company, shares his experience in transforming the road safety system, which significantly reduced the number of traffic accidents.
Accident Analysis: Finding Hidden Patterns
The speaker breaks down the accident analysis process, which became the starting point for changes. Instead of a standard investigation of each individual case, a comprehensive approach was applied: collecting data across dozens of parameters to identify hidden factors. It turned out that conventional ideas about the causes of accidents are often wrong.
- Impact of experience: The analysis showed that overall driving experience does not correlate with accident rates. The key factor turned out to be the length of work at a specific site: 50% of accidents occur with drivers who have been on site for less than six months. This shifted the focus to the onboarding of new employees.
- Work and rest schedule: It was found that the duration of work during a shift is not the main cause of accidents. The quality and duration of rest before a shift are much more important. A third of the drivers involved in accidents had insufficient rest (5-7 hours instead of the required 11).
- Road conditions: Despite difficult conditions (elevation changes, dirt roads), in most cases, drivers recognized the danger in a timely manner but made the wrong decisions (for example, choosing the wrong gear on an uphill climb).
Transforming Driver Management Tools
The presentation details the process of reviewing existing driver training and information tools. The speaker demonstrates how to increase their effectiveness using the example of safety stand-downs.
- Automated communication: The implementation of an automatic notification system for contractors via a contractor portal allowed for updating contact details and ensuring targeted information distribution.
- Task module: Creating a task management system with automatic reminders significantly increased attendance at safety stand-downs.
- Electronic tracking: Using electronic passes to record attendance at safety stand-downs eliminated routine paperwork and allowed for the prompt generation of lists of trained personnel.
