Integrating HSE into the ESG Agenda

The sustainable development (ESG) agenda has become an integral part of the strategy of large industrial companies. Sergey Kolychev, Head of the HSE function at Polyus, explains how the classic HSE agenda is linked to ESG. In the social component (Social), two key groups are distinguished: own employees and contractor workers. For the gold mining industry, the focus is specifically shifted to the safety of personnel and contractors, as well as third parties who may be affected by accidents at facilities.

Evolution of the Safety Management System

The speaker demonstrates the development path from basic standards to automation using his company as an example. The process began in 2014 with the development of a safety culture and the creation of corporate standards. In 2018, an automated HSE process management system was launched, and certification according to international standards was passed. An important stage was participation in international ratings, where the key requirement is not just demonstrating "good practices," but having a clear understanding of one's risks and working purposefully with them.

Risk-Oriented Approach and Management

The presentation details the risk-oriented approach. HSE risks are integrated into the company's overall risk management system and are controlled centrally. Decisions on resource allocation are made at the management company level. The Central Safety Committee, consisting of top management, regularly evaluates the achievement of goals, the implementation of measures, and the results of critical incident investigations. The safety agenda is managed not only through the HSE function but also with the involvement of all functional areas.

Working with Contractors and Automating Routine

Special attention is paid to managing the safety of contractor organizations. A system of pre-qualification and control at capital construction facilities has been implemented. Currently, the focus is shifting to motivating contractors to perform work safely. In addition, the speaker notes the importance of automation: part of the routine operations of the HSE function has been transferred to multifunctional centers, allowing specialists to focus on practical results. To ensure the safety of transportation, onboard monitoring and driver fatigue control systems are used.
