The Formula for Success in HSE

14 September 2023 🇷🇺 Original: русский 1 min read

Every manager and safety specialist strives to build an effective HSE system.

I mean: safe and comfortable conditions, risk minimization, timely prevention and elimination of violations.

At the same time, achieving professional success is important: an outstanding career, interesting projects, material well-being.

When a specialist develops personally and professionally, their mindset changes, and so do their achievements. Therefore, one should not be limited by legislative requirements but constantly move forward and expand their horizons.

Educational institutions provide the necessary theoretical knowledge, including the legal framework, but essential skills are acquired through experience, which involves significant time and stress.

And, in many ways, information can be found through networking with colleagues, books, articles, and webinars.

Often we face problems:

  • indifference of managers;
  • employee resistance;
  • lack of resources;
  • formalism.

The personality of the specialist plays a huge role in all accompanying processes, and it is important to understand what attracts you to the job.

Why do you do it?

Everyone has their own motivation: new tasks; the opportunity to improve working conditions; stable work; company image, salary, and social package.

When I asked at a conference: "Do you know why you entered our profession?", 50 out of 300 people answered.

Determine what is interesting to you specifically.

Let me remind you that occupational safety in Russia has existed since 1818; on January 7, a law on work supervision was passed. It was intended to increase safety levels in factories and mines. This day can be considered the beginning of Russian HSE.

The field of activity is becoming more relevant, as demonstrated by amendments to the Labor Code of the Russian Federation, so striving forward is a crucial condition for achieving results.

Qualities and skills of a successful leader.

1. Leadership and confidence.

A leader is always self-confident and must demonstrate this trait to subordinates. The phrase "as the leader goes, so go the employees" has deep meaning.

2. Being a professional: understanding your field. Perhaps not at the same level as the workers, but at a high level.

3. Adhering to values and principles.

Principles are what we are respected for. If a person has principles and does not violate them, it gives them an inner core.

4. Making specific decisions and giving clear assignments.

Express your opinion openly. Without a proper assignment, the result will be corresponding. Periodically, I observe how a boss, indulging subordinates, speaks too softly and in general terms. This is categorically unacceptable.

Specificity and clarity are the hallmarks of a competent leader.

5. Using employees' abilities.

All people are different: some offer original solutions, others implement them, and still others are specialists in paperwork. Use the strengths of your subordinates.

6. Controlling and caring for your people.

An employee must understand that the leader stands guard over their interests and will not shift responsibility onto them before management.

7. Initiative.

This trait is not given to everyone, but without it, it is impossible to achieve success in your field.

Of course, there is a certain risk involved, but otherwise, it is extremely difficult to prove yourself.

Initiative can be the very spark a leader needs to "revive" sluggish, uninterested employees who are focused on the process rather than the result.

We regularly communicate with management and colleagues, so let's talk about positioning at meetings.

At such events, first of all, you need to eliminate weak words and use strong ones. For example: instead of "probably" — "I am sure"; "it seems to me" — "I believe"; "possibly" — "I am convinced"; "I will try" — "I will do it."

Secondly, make a plan and stick to the timing.

Respect your time and the time of others. Think through answers to questions you might be asked and do not make excuses. If you don't know something, say so. Promise to provide up-to-date information later.

Remember that others will discourage and criticize you. This is absolutely normal.

In any case, answer confidently and stay calm.

The importance of your social circle.

Surround yourself with people who share your interests.

Use thematic communities, interesting events, and sports competitions to find friends who are close to you in spirit.

Communication should inspire achievements and charge you with a good mood.

Everything is in your hands!
