From Engineer to Top Manager: Why Professional Knowledge is No Longer Enough
Occupational safety in Russia has come a long way since 1818, and today the profession of an industrial safety specialist is becoming increasingly significant. However, many competent engineers who regularly undergo specialized training and implement new practices remain in the same position for years with minimal salary indexation. In his presentation, Pavel Mitrokhin, Head of Environment and HSE at Oriflame in Russia and the CIS, analyzes the reasons for this stagnation and shares his personal experience of career transformation.
The speaker emphasizes: basic education in HSE, industrial, or fire safety is no longer enough for a career breakthrough today. Life requires constant personal development. The main insight of the presentation is that success in the profession is impossible without genuine passion for your work and an understanding of your own mission, whether it is improving working conditions or saving lives.
Key Qualities of a Successful HSE Manager
The speaker examines in detail the skills that distinguish an ordinary executor from a leader capable of building an effective safety system and overcoming management indifference and employee resistance.
- Confidence and professionalism. Deep knowledge of laws and modern practices is the foundation of confidence. Without this, it is impossible to reasonably defend your position before management.
- Integrity. The ability not to compromise on critical issues (for example, not hiding accidents or not allowing work without a briefing) commands respect, even if it initially leads to conflicts.
- Specificity in communication. Rejecting words of doubt ("I will try", "probably", "maybe") in favor of clear commitments ("I will do it", "I am sure") positions the specialist as a strong leader ready to take responsibility.
- Setting measurable goals. An abstract "improve working conditions" does not work. Goals must be specific: reduce injury rates by 60%, get a 40% discount from the Social Insurance Fund, implement a LOTO system or the ISO 45001 standard.
Public Speaking and Positioning: How to Be Heard
The presentation details a skill that is not obvious to many HSE specialists: the ability to speak publicly and conduct meetings competently. The speaker shows by example how an insecure presentation of material devalues even the most correct initiatives.
Key principles of effective communication discussed by the speaker:
- The speaker is in charge. It is important to control the course of the meeting, stop unconstructive discussions, and not make excuses for mistakes, but rather propose solutions.
- Respect for the listeners' time. It is necessary to exhaust the topic, not the audience's patience. Clear timing and conciseness are signs of professionalism.
- Personal interest. It is impossible to captivate an audience with a topic (even a routine one like defending a budget or conducting training) if it is not interesting to the speaker themselves.
In addition, the speaker draws attention to the importance of individual style and appearance, which form the first impression and demonstrate respect for colleagues.
