Conscious Safety. Myth or Reality?

What is conscious safety?

Conscious safety is an approach where every employee:

  • Understands the potential risks and hazards associated with their work.
  • Evaluates these risks and makes decisions that minimize the likelihood of accidents.
  • Takes responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their colleagues.
  • Actively participates in improving working conditions and identifying new risks.

People have internal factors that influence safety. I propose we figure out together what these factors are and how they affect SAFETY.

THE FIRST FACTOR is KNOWLEDGE

After being hired, the first thing we acquire is KNOWLEDGE on how to work safely through:

  • training;
  • briefings;
  • instructions;
  • experienced workers sharing their knowledge with us.

THE SECOND FACTOR is SKILLS. What are skills using the example of MMK? Where can they be acquired?

Upon getting a job, we gain SKILLS

  • during an internship, learning from a mentor;
  • during the further performance of job duties.

Having gained KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS, we clearly understand how to perform the work SAFELY.

Work becomes safe only when we make choices based on KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS on how to do the job SAFELY — this is the ATTITUDE TOWARDS SAFETY.

ONLY THE WORKER THEMSELVES CHOOSES THE ATTITUDE TO WORK SAFELY OR NOT, AND THIS DEFINES A PROFESSIONAL

It is also worth considering what types of attitudes exist.

The first type is the PRISONER

At the production site, they are "serving time," just wanting the work to end as quickly as possible. In their opinion, everyone is trying to force them to do the job.

GOAL: JUST ENDURE IT AND BE FREE FROM WORK

A Prisoner at work is passive towards their duties and resists everything.

What does a worker in the Prisoner state think at the production site?

  • I wish the shift would end sooner
  • There's no time to stop the equipment
  • There's no time to follow the instructions.
  • I need to do it quickly and be free

The second type is the VACATIONER

They believe that at the production site, they should be served and shouldn't have to strain themselves.

THEIR GOAL: TO GET PLEASURE AND COMFORT

A person in the Vacationer state thinks:

  • comfort is more important to me than safety
  • someone else should do it, not me
  • I don't care about the safety of others

The third type is the PARTNER

Regarding safety, they are ready to work in a team and are not indifferent to what is happening... THEIR OWN SAFETY AND THE SAFETY OF OTHERS IS THE MAIN GOAL.

THROUGHOUT LIFE, A PERSON EXPERIENCES ALL THESE TYPES OF ATTITUDES, AND TRANSITIONING FROM ONE TYPE TO ANOTHER IS POSSIBLE AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT.

ONLY WITH THE ATTITUDE THAT "SAFETY IS IMPORTANT TO ME" CAN YOU PRESERVE BOTH YOUR OWN LIFE AND HEALTH, AS WELL AS THOSE AROUND YOU!

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE!
