All companies operate within the framework of their internal policies and procedures, or at least strive to do so. Employees receive safety briefings and are familiarized with internal regulations relevant to their specific roles and responsibilities. Certain internal regulations apply to all employees across the facility, regardless of their specialization or the type of work performed, and compliance with them is mandatory.
In fly-in fly-out (FIFO) rotational operations, the desired outcome is not always achieved. When arriving for a new rotation, workers cannot always recall key internal regulations or explain their immediate response actions in the event of an emergency, the mine dispatcher's phone number, the Cardinal Safety Rules (CSR), or the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) procedure.
What should be done when workers start forgetting emergency response procedures, the CSR, and JSA—especially since not knowing them can lead to undesirable consequences? There is a solution: a quick-reference guide that fits easily into a breast pocket.
As a result, we designed a pocket guide and had it printed. Subsequently, the pocket guides were distributed to all department heads to hand out to their teams. For new hires, the guides were issued directly during the HSE induction briefing.
During Leadership Safety Walks across operational units, employees were asked about their knowledge of the company's internal regulations, whether they had their Occupational Safety pocket guides with them, and what they thought of the content and overall usefulness of the tool. Notably, everyone had their guides on hand, and several employees referred to them during the discussions. Workers appreciated the compact size of the guide, which fits neatly into a breast pocket, and emphasized that it helps them quickly refresh their memory on emergency procedures, the CSR, and JSA whenever needed.
Later on, this pocket guide was recommended for adoption across all company sites.
