We are used to hearing and repeating that safety is the company’s “priority No. 1” and even its “value”. But let us take off the rose-tinted glasses!
Priorities change fast when the production plan is on fire or the budget is squeezed. And values, alas, are exchanged, bought and sold whenever market conditions or a looming crisis demand it.
Yet can the life and health of people ever be a matter of compromise or bargaining?
Accepting this axiom opens the way to a real transformation of the safety culture in a company.
An effective safety culture does not require values to be declared.
Safety is a continuous struggle for people’s hearts and minds.
The main task is that managers and frontline employees start seeing their own family in the people around them, not abstract performers, “cogs” and “resources”.
For a successful culture transformation it is critically important that such development is initiated at the very top of management. This is what carries it through the entire organisational structure of the company.
But there is no need to wait for an initiative “from above”: safety is a two-way street.
Every one of us can start these changes right now, around us, at our own workplace.
It takes little: a bit more attention, a certain amount of persistence and a great deal of patience.
What to do and how is well known:
As you can see, it is all simple — no heroic feats required.
Only one question remains: what are you personally ready to do for safety?
