Colleagues, I would like to share an excellent tool that can be useful not only in various areas of safety but for all departments of an enterprise in general: the 'One Point Lesson' (hereinafter referred to as OPL).
An OPL is a memo that can be created using any convenient template: from simple hand-written sheets posted on information boards to computer-designed templates with sections for diagrams, photos, etc. Nevertheless, these memos are a simple and quick way to convey necessary information to personnel regarding any issues or changes.
OPLs at our enterprise consist of information gathered on a single A4 sheet, which can be used for informing and training employees in any department (both office and production) in the following areas:
Examples for the 'Basic Knowledge' category include the following topics: ladder testing, using a gas analyzer when working in confined spaces, filling out work permits, emergency procedures in case of an accident, using a paper shredder, communicating 5S rules, etc.
The 'Improvement Proposals' category includes employee suggestions that help improve processes, reduce risks, and increase work efficiency. In this OPL, an employee reflects their vision, possibly with schematic drawings or a process description, which is then reviewed by a committee to decide on implementation or rejection.
The 'Before/After Improvements' category reflects improvements in employee working conditions made by the employees themselves or through operating or capital expenditures, shown in photos. For example: installing new fencing, repairing floor holes, applying markings, installing exhaust hoods, etc.
After an OPL is developed, personnel review and sign an acknowledgment sheet attached to the OPL as needed, and it is then posted on information boards.
To assist with the creation and registration of OPLs, I am attaching: a flowchart as a separate file (for production and office departments), an existing OPL template, and an example of a developed OPL regarding HSE issues at our enterprise.
