Context: Why Risk Assessment is the Foundation of Safety

Occupational risk assessment and management is not just a formal requirement, but the fundamental basis for building safe production. It is during the risk identification process that tasks for further work with them are formed. During the webinar, experts from Salavatsteklo and Pirelli share their experience of transitioning from reactive incident investigation to proactive risk management, involving all personnel in this process and striving to achieve zero injuries (Vision Zero).

Salavatsteklo JSC Practice: From Micro-injury Investigation to Conscious Safety

Svetlana Grigorieva, Head of the HSE Department at Salavatsteklo JSC, talks about the company's path to zero injuries. A key step was convincing management of the need to investigate not only official accidents, but also all micro-injuries, as well as cases of deteriorating health in the workplace. This made it possible to identify hidden problems and begin systematic work to eliminate them.

  • Involving workers in the development of instructions: Workers who are at the epicenter of hazards actively participate in the creation and adjustment of HSE instructions. This makes the documents practically applicable and understandable.
  • Selection of PPE by experiment: To eliminate cuts and punctures when working with glass, modern PPE was selected, as well as 100% cotton workwear and ergonomic safety shoes, which is critical for maintaining performance during a 12-hour shift.
  • Zoning and ergonomics: Clear separation of pedestrian zones and traffic zones, as well as the organization of workplaces according to ergonomic principles, reduce the likelihood of incidents.
  • First aid on site: The installation of eye wash stations and the availability of first aid kits allow workers to promptly provide first aid before medics arrive.

Pirelli Experience: A Systematic Approach and the Bow-Tie Method

Vladimir Alekseev, Leading HSE Specialist at the Voronezh Tire Plant (Pirelli), details the risk assessment process at an enterprise operating in four shifts. The presentation shows how the company uses the bow-tie method for an in-depth analysis of priority problems.

  • Formation of cross-functional working groups: Representatives of the technical department, maintenance personnel, production, and the HSE department participate in risk assessment. This provides a comprehensive view of the problem.
  • Visual inspection and personnel survey: The work begins with going to the line, inspecting equipment, and talking with operators of all shifts to identify hidden threats.
  • Equipment modernization and safety systems: Modernization is carried out based on the risk assessment. For example, the installation of individually fitted suspended safety systems when servicing curing presses at height significantly reduced the risk of falling.
  • Continuous reassessment: After implementing changes (after a month of operation), a reassessment and employee survey are conducted to confirm the effectiveness of the measures.
